GPS Route sharing

ShareMyRoutes enabled you to share your walking, cycling routes with the world, as well as find other people's routes. As well as some interesting content, it's packed to the rafters with interesting technology. The site written in C sharp, and is running on .NET 3.5, and SQL server 2005, running on a server provided by Amazon EC2 (Amazon's cloud computing service). There's also a lot of web services, Ajax, and Silverlight 3.0 powering the site, as well as a whole load of mapping.

Silverlight

We love Silverlight. It's not just a pretty way to write a UI. You can write a serious business application, by calling web services. These all use an ASP .NET SOAP webservice, but using WCF, or even REST is equally valid. These are demos of actual Silverlight pages used in an actual live site. Not all the functionality present in the live site is enabled in the demo, as no actual data is saved.

Silverlight Mapping. Interactive maps, and a SOAP back end.

Silverlight Map Editor. Draw on the map, or import GPX/KML. Lots of complex Silverlight and a SOAP back end.

Silverlight Photo Editor. Edit a photo (rotate/crop/adjust), and upload via SOAP. Just about all the fun things you can do with Silverlight 3 are here. Animations, SOAP calls, graphics handling, custom HLSL effects..

A proof of concept Mash up of ShareMyRoutes data and OS Maps data, using the ShareMyRoutes API, and the Ordance Survery Open Space API, OpenSpace Mashup.

A long time ago before ShareMyRoutes, when I was just starting to play around with maps, I did this site. It's still packed full of great routes in North Yorkshire, but the technology isn't nearly as cool as ShareMyRoutes.
